Do I need a full website redesign, or just a refresh?

Most small businesses don't need a full redesign. If your website's content and structure are basically right but it looks dated, feels clunky, or isn't converting visitors into customers, a refresh, improving what you already have, is usually faster, cheaper, and less risky than starting over.

A full redesign makes sense when your business itself has changed significantly (new services, new audience, new brand identity) or your current platform can't support what you need technically. A refresh makes sense when your business is fundamentally the same, but your website hasn't kept up with it.

This is the core of what Question Mark Designs offers: working within the platform and structure you already have, rather than tearing it down and starting over. You keep what's already working. We fix what isn't.

How much does a website refresh cost?

Question Mark Designs currently offers two pricing options: $1,000 for design only, or $1,500 for design and implementation (meaning the new design is actually built and live on your site, not just handed to you as a file).

These are founding rates, available to the first 5 businesses I work with. Pricing will increase after that as the practice grows, so early clients lock in the lowest rate the business will ever offer.

What's included at both price points:

  • A heuristic evaluation of your current site (a structured review identifying what's working and what isn't)
  • Research into your core users, business goals, and brand voice
  • A clear primary call-to-action defined for your site
  • Branding and color guidelines
  • Accessibility support
  • Desktop and mobile layout design

The $1,500 tier adds hands-on implementation, so the redesign goes live on your existing platform without you needing to build anything yourself.

How long does a website refresh take?

A typical website refresh takes a few weeks from kickoff to delivery, depending on the size of your site and how quickly feedback is exchanged along the way.

Because the process starts with a heuristic evaluation (reviewing what your current site is already doing) rather than a from-scratch design process, timelines tend to be shorter than a full redesign. The exact schedule is confirmed with each client at the start of the project based on the scope of their site.

Will a redesign hurt my Google ranking or existing traffic?

No, because Question Mark Designs works within your existing website platform, your site's URLs, existing content, and search history stay intact rather than being rebuilt from zero.

A common fear with website redesigns is that a new agency will migrate you to an entirely new platform, which can break existing links, lose indexed pages, and tank search rankings temporarily or permanently. Since this process improves your current site rather than replacing its foundation, that risk is significantly reduced.

Do I need to switch my website platform or host?

No. Question Mark Designs works within the platform and backend you already use, whether that's Squarespace, WordPress, Wix, or something else, rather than requiring you to migrate to a new system.

This matters for two reasons: it keeps costs down (no new hosting fees, no re-platforming project), and it means your team can keep using tools they already know how to log into and update.

What is a heuristic evaluation, and why does it matter?

A heuristic evaluation is a structured review of your website that identifies what's working well and what's creating friction for your visitors, based on established usability principles rather than personal opinion.

In plain terms: before any redesign work begins, your current site gets a real audit. This means the changes that follow are based on actual problems (confusing navigation, unclear calls to action, poor mobile experience, etc.), not just a fresh coat of paint. It's the difference between guessing what to change and knowing what to change.

This evaluation also includes understanding your core users (who actually visits your site and what they came to do) and your business goals (what you need that visit to turn into, a call, a booking, a purchase, a form submission).

Will my website work well on mobile?

Yes, every project includes both desktop and mobile layout design, built to work well regardless of what device your visitors are using.

More website visits happen on phones than desktop computers for most small businesses today, so a site that only looks good on a laptop is losing customers before they ever see what you offer. Mobile layout isn't an add-on in this process, it's part of the core design work from the start.

Is my website accessible, and why does that matter?

Accessibility support is included in every Question Mark Designs project, meaning your site is designed to work for visitors using screen readers, keyboard navigation, and other assistive technology, not just visitors without disabilities.

Beyond being the right thing to do, accessible design tends to be clearer and easier to use for everyone; good color contrast, readable text sizing, and logical navigation structure help all visitors, not just those relying on assistive tools. It can also reduce legal risk, since businesses have faced lawsuits over inaccessible websites.

What happens after my new site launches?

Once your redesigned site is live (for the $1,500 implementation tier) or delivered as a finished design (for the $1,000 design-only tier), you'll have a clear understanding of what changed and why, so you can maintain it going forward or bring in your own team to do so.

Question Mark Designs doesn't lock clients into an ongoing retainer to keep their own site running. If you want to make small changes yourself afterward, you'll know exactly what was done and why. If you'd like ongoing support, that can be discussed separately, but it is never required.
